The font difference

At first glance, the cards look identical. Same picture, same text, white border, copyright 1995. However, the German Revised (on the left) is distinctly different than its German Fourth counterpart (on the right).

If you look closer at the cards' text, you will notice that the font is significantly smaller on the German Revised card (on the left) than on its German Fourth counterpart (on the right).

This is strange as the older German Beta card has the large font (on the left) and so does the English Revised (on the right).

So, it seems as if the German Revised Deathlace is the outlier and WotC decided to switch back to the easier-to-read larger font.

At any rate, this difference in the font size between editions helps us distinguish 7 of the German Revised cards (German Revised on the left, German Fourth on the right):

  • Thoughtlace (small font → large font).
  • Animate Dead (small font → large font).
  • Drudge Skeletons (large font → small font).
  • Chaoslace (small font → large font).
  • Magnetic Mountain(small font → large font).
  • Lifelace (small font → large font).

As you can see, for some unknown reason, the Laces seems to be overly represented in the font differences.

The German Revised Drudge Skeletons is a special case as it appears that the German Revised edition (on the left) with the larger font gives way to the German Fourth edition (on the right), which has a much smaller font.

The older German Beta card has the small font (on the left) and is a direct translation from the English Revised (on the right).

Looking back at the German Revised Drudge Skeletons, the translators skipped the entire second part of the English text! WotC probably decided to revive it when releasing the German Fourth edition. Interesting.

Mentioning Drudge Skeletons brings us to the most famous German Fourth card of all: the Swamp misprint...

Under construction.
